Plan Ahead for the October 5 NIH Deadline

October 2, 2026

Reminder: The October 5 National Institutes of Health (NIH) deadline is approaching, and the Department of Contracts and Grants (DCG) anticipates a high volume of proposal submissions.

October 5 is NIH’s standard Cycle III deadline for the following new applications:

  • R01: Research Project Grants

  • U01: Research Project Cooperative Agreements

If you are planning to submit an application for the October 5 deadline, please notify your school and DCG Officer as soon as possible. Complete proposal materials should be provided well in advance of the deadline to allow sufficient time for review, resolution of potential issues, and successful submission.

Investigators and research administrators should also confirm that:

  • Financial Conflict of Interest (FCOI) training and disclosures are current.

  • Required Research Security Training (RST) has been completed and remains current.

  • Each individual’s ORCID iD is linked to their eRA Commons account and appears in the Persistent Identifier (PID) section of the applicable Common Form.

Incorrect eRA Commons IDs or ORCID iDs that are not properly linked to the corresponding eRA Commons accounts can generate validation errors requiring an application to be corrected and resubmitted. These issues can be especially problematic during high-volume deadlines, when system processing may be delayed.

Although NIH applications are generally due by 5:00 p.m. local time, investigators and research administrators should confirm the applicable deadline and requirements in the specific Notice of Funding Opportunity.

We appreciate your partnership in helping USC submit complete, accurate, and timely applications.
