Update! No-Cost Extension Functionality in eRA

August 8, 2025

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has announced that the one-time, one-year No-Cost Extension (NCE) option has been reactivated. This option allows eligible Principal Investigators to extend the final budget period of their project by up to 12 months, without requesting additional funds, in order to complete the originally approved scope of work.

Why This Matters:

This change provides PIs with valuable flexibility to finish project objectives without the need for supplemental funding. Timely action is encouraged to ensure eligible projects can benefit.

Key Details & Actions:

PIs should proactively reach out to their assigned DCG Officer to discuss and, if appropriate, request an NCE. Requests should be made well in advance of the project end date to allow time for review and processing.

  • Applies only to eligible NIH awards.
  • May be exercised one time for up to 12 months.
  • Must be used solely to complete the original scope of work.

Please Note: In accordance with this notice, pending NCEs previously submitted by DCG through the Prior Approval module will now be submitted in the Status module.

Questions?

For any questions related to No-Cost Extensions, please contact your DCG Officer.
