NIH Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Pilot Update

July 17, 2023

NIH Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Pilot Update

Announcement: In October 2020, The National Institutes of Health (NIH) issued a new Policy for Data Management and Sharing, effective January 25, 2023. The new policy requires a Data Management and Sharing Plan (DMS Plan) for ALL NIH-funded projects, an expansion from the 2003 policy requirement for projects over $500K in annual direct costs to include a data sharing plan.

DMPTool

As a result of the new Policy for Data Management and Sharing, a free, open source, community-supported application that can be used to create and share data management plans has been created, called DMPTool. Anyone can use DMPTool to create data management plans. It provides a click-through wizard for creating a DMP that complies with funder requirements.

NIH Templates

During a recent NIH Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Pilot Update Session, it was announced that FDP NIH DMS Pilot templates are now available in DMPTool for any individual needing to create an NIH DMS Plan. Individuals using DMPTool to create a DMS Plan will now see three options when selecting NIH as the primary funding organization.  These templates are:

  1. “NIH-Default DMSP”, which is based on NIH’s optional DMS Plan Format. If you have been using DMPTool to create an NIH DMS Plan, this is the template that has been available in DMPTool since the NIH DMS Policy went into effect on January 25, 2023.
  2. NEW “NIH-FDP Pilot Template Alpha” – the DMPTool version of the pdf format Alpha Template.
  3. NEW “NIH-FDP Pilot Template Bravo” – the DMPTool version of the word doc format Bravo Template.

A downloadable word doc of these two new templates is also posted on the pilot webpage. These DMPTool templates and the “paper-based” templates they are based on, were developed and vetted by NIH Program staff and can be used to create the final DMS Plan included in a submission to NIH.

NIH is also requesting that anyone who uses Alpha or Bravo in DMPTool or on paper, complete a feedback survey.

Please Note: Our DCG website has also been updated with the DMPTool on the NIH Data Management and Sharing page.

Town Hall Meeting

FDP and our NIH colleagues are also pleased to announce an FDP DMS Pilot Town Hall on Monday, July 17th 10:30 am-12 noon Eastern. All are invited to join this listening session where updates on the progress of the pilot will be shared as well as feedback regarding implementation of the new NIH Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Policy and the FDP DMS Pilot. Please come with your questions!
