Managing Research Awards in Times of Uncertainty

May 2, 2025

Dear Colleagues,

Research institutions across the country, including USC, are seeing an increase in award terminations and stop-work orders, often with little or no advance notice.

In these uncertain times, it is critical that researchers and research administrators remain vigilant and proactively ensure that expenses are incurred and posted promptly. Taking timely action is essential to help secure reimbursement, minimize transactions after a termination date, and reduce the need for additional justification of unbilled expenses.

To support smooth closeouts, please:

  • Comply closely with all sponsor requirements.
  • Work proactively with your SPA Award Contract Owner on any at-risk awards.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter and for your continued efforts to protect USC’s research activities.

Best regards,

Cindy Lee, Director, Sponsored Projects Accounting
