New Nominations
- Congratulations to Yaoheng Yang (Viterbi) for his nomination to the 2025 Searle Scholars Program. RII wishes Dr. Yang the best of luck!
- Congratulations to Dillon Cogan (Pharmacy), Xianrui Cheng (Dornsife), and Matthew Pratt (Dornsife) for their nominations to the Mathers Foundation limited submission program. RII wishes them the best of luck!
New Limited Submissions
- Please find below seven limited submissions, two of which are time-sensitive, for your perusal and distribution. Links to each opportunity are below:

- Process for Limited Submissions: PIs must submit their application as a Limited Submission through the Research Initiatives and Infrastructure Application Portal: https://rii.usc.edu/oor-portal/. PIs must create their own SurveyMonkey account in order to proceed with submission.
- Materials to submit include:
- (1) Two-Page Proposal Summary (1” margins; single-spaced; font type: Arial, Helvetica, Times New Roman, or Georgia typeface; font size: 11 pt). Page limit includes references and illustrations. Pages that exceed the 2-page limit will be excluded from review.
- For the Mellon New Directions Fellowship, please see the write-up link above for additional instructions.
- (2) CV – (5 pages maximum)
- Note: The portal requires information about the PIs in addition to department and contact information, including the 10-digit USC ID#, Gender, and Ethnicity. Please have this material prepared before beginning this application.
Other Opportunities of Note
- McKnight Scholar Awards
- Funder: McKnight Foundation
Purpose: To support neuroscientists in the early stages of their careers. - Grant Amount: $225,000 over 3 years (no IDC)
- LOI submission: Aug 12, 2024 – Jan 13, 2025
- What McKnight is looking for: Exceptional early-stage scientists who are establishing an independent lab and research career. McKnight’s intent is to foster a commitment to research careers that will have an important impact on the study of the brain, and also to support scientists committed to mentoring neuroscientists from underrepresented groups. Applicants must demonstrate their ability to solve significant neuroscience problems neuroscience, which may include the translation of basic research to clinical practice, and also demonstrate a commitment to an equitable and inclusive lab environment.
- Previous McKnight Scholars have generated key findings in neuroscience, including:
- The discovery of receptors that encode the senses of smell, taste, and thermal pain.
- The first crystal structure of one of the ion channels that control the excitability of neurons.
- The discovery of neurotrophic factors that promote neuronal survival.
- The identification of molecules that promote axon growth and regeneration in the nervous system.
- The discovery of proteins in the nerve terminal that mediate the release of neurotransmitters.
- The identification of genes that control short- and long-term memory.
- Eligibility: Assistant Professor, having served at that rank for less than five years at the application deadline.
