Financial Conflict of Interest (FCOI) in Research Training

September 9, 2025

*** Please see the below update from the USC Office of Culture, Ethics and Compliance ***

A new course titled “Financial Conflict of Interest (FCOI) in Research Training” was released in TrojanLearn last week. This course replaces the former training that was titled “HHS Conflicts of Interest in Research Training”. As before, this course meets the at least every 4-year training mandated by all researchers who propose or conduct research sponsored by the Department of Health and Human Services (e.g. NIH, CDC, HRSA). It also meets training requirements for other sponsors such as the Department of Energy.

If you have recently completed the “HHS Conflicts of Interest in Research Training” course, you will not need to complete the new course until it is assigned to you as part of your normal schedule.

Going forward, the “HHS Conflicts of Interest in Research Training” is no longer available in TrojanLearn and any mandated researchers will need to complete the new “Financial Conflict of Interest (FCOI) in Research Training” course.

Key Updates Include:

Any researchers with expired training or training set to expire soon will be assigned the new FCOI course and receive a separate email from TrojanLearn.

  • The course is approximately 25 minutes to complete and ends with a short quiz.
  • The new course has an interface with Cayuse so completions will show in the Trainings & Certification section of the People section in Cayuse. If a researcher has completed the old course in the last 4 years, their training requirement is considered complete. Make sure to check both the “HHS Conflicts of Interest in Research” training as well as the new “Financial Conflict of Interest in Research Training” completion dates.
